    Early-emerging cognitive vulnerability to depression and the serotonin transporter promoter region polymorphism.E. P. Hayden, L. R. Dougherty, B. Maloney, T. M. Olino, H. Sheikh, C. E. Durbin, J. I. Nurnberger Jr, D. K. Lahiri & D. N. Klein - 2008 - J Affect Disord 107:227-30.
BACKGROUND: Serotonin transporter promoter genotype appears to increase risk for depression in the context of stressful life events. However, the effects of this genotype on measures of stress sensitivity are poorly understood. Therefore, this study examined whether 5-HTTLPR genotype was associated with negative information processing biases in early childhood. METHOD: Thirty-nine unselected seven-year-old children completed a negative mood induction procedure and a Self-Referent Encoding Task designed to measure positive and negative schematic processing. Children were also genotyped for the 5-HTTLPR gene. (...)

    Temperamental fearfulness in childhood and the serotonin transporter promoter region polymorphism: a multimethod association study.E. P. Hayden, L. R. Dougherty, B. Maloney, C. Emily Durbin, T. M. Olino, J. I. Nurnberger Jr, D. K. Lahiri & D. N. Klein - 2007 - Psychiatr Genet 17:135-42.
OBJECTIVES: Early-emerging, temperamental differences in fear-related traits may be a heritable vulnerability factor for anxiety disorders. Previous research indicates that the serotonin transporter promoter region polymorphism is a candidate gene for such traits. METHODS: Associations between 5-HTTLPR genotype and indices of fearful child temperament, derived from maternal report and standardized laboratory observations, were examined in a community sample of 95 preschool-aged children. RESULTS: Children with one or more long alleles of the 5-HTTLPR gene were rated as significantly more nervous during (...)

A Randomised Controlled Trial of Inhibitory Control Training for Smoking Cessation: Outcomes, Mediators and Methodological Considerations.Laura K. Hughes, Melissa J. Hayden, Jason Bos, Natalia S. Lawrence, George J. Youssef, Ron Borland & Petra K. Staiger - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Objective: Inhibitory control training has shown promise for improving health behaviours, however, less is known about its mediators of effectiveness. The current paper reports whether ICT reduces smoking-related outcomes such as craving and nicotine dependence, increases motivation to quit and whether reductions in smoking or craving are mediated by response inhibition or a devaluation of smoking stimuli.Method: Adult smokers were randomly allocated to receive 14 days of smoking-specific ICT or active control training. Participants were followed up to 3-months post-intervention. This (...)

    The Chronology of Antiphon's Speeches.K. J. Dover - 1950 - Classical Quarterly 44 (1-2):44-.
Two firm points in the chronology of Antiphon's speeches are VI περ το χορευτο in 419/81 and the Defence in 411/02. Speech V περ τσ 'Hρδου is now generally dated between these two; only the vaguest attempts have been made to date I κατ τσ μητρυασ; there is no general agreement on either the date or the authorship of the Tetralogies. The main purpose of this paper is to adduce linguistic as well as external evidence for the dating of V (...)

    Illusionist Integrated Information Theory.K. J. McQueen - 2019 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 26 (5-6):141-169.
The integrated information theory is a promising theory of consciousness. However, there are several problems with IIT's axioms and postulates. Moreover, IIT entails that some twodimensional grids of identical logic gates have more consciousness than humans. Many have found this prediction to be implausible, and as will be argued here, this prediction also exacerbates the so-called 'hard problem of consciousness'. Recently, it has been argued that if we treat the phenomenological aspects of consciousness as an illusion, we can avoid the (...)

    Ancient Greek Literature.K. J. Dover - 1997 - Oxford University Press UK.
This historical survey of Greek literature from 700 BC to 550 AD concentrates on the principal authors and quotes many passages from their work in translation, to allow the reader to form his own impression of its quality, including Homer, Plato, Aristophanes, and Euripides. Attention is drawn both to the elements in Greek literature and attitudes to life which are unfamiliar to us, and to the elements which appeal most powerfully to succeeding generations. Although it is recognized that this appeal (...)

    Some Types of Abnormal Word-Order in Attic Comedy.K. J. Dover - 1985 - Classical Quarterly 35 (02):324-.
On the analogy of the colloquial register in some modern languages, where narrative and argument may be punctuated by oaths and exclamations in order to maintain a high affective level and compel the hearer's attention, it is reasonable to postulate that Attic conversation also was punctuated by oaths, that this ingredient in comic language was drawn from life, and that the comparative frequency of ║ M M Δ in comedy is sufficiently explained thereby. There are obvious affinities between some passages (...)

On this the following observations should be made: 1. The sigla ABCEFM are used here as in all editions from Hude onwards, H as in Hude though not universally since, and as in Bartoletti, Per la storia del testo di Tucidide ; have not been used before. 2. In positing β as ancestor of ABEFHM but not of C I follow Hude, Bartoletti, Stuart Jones, and Powell. I differ from them in leaving out of consideration G , which is normally (...)
